Germantown is the fastest growing community in Montgomery County, with a current population of over 80,000 residents. The Germantown Master Plan includes the construction of a regional mall, a Town Center, and an employment corridor spanning several hundred acres, and providing thousands of jobs. With over 2,000,000 square feet of office and R&D space in the development pipeline, Germantown has become the major employment center along the I-270 corridor.

Major employers include Fairchild Space & Defense Corporation, the U.S. Department of Energy, Digital Communication, Telecommunications Techniques Corporation, Hughes Network Systems, and Comsat.

Most importantly, Germantown is home to a young, vibrant, well-educated population, who live among the several distinct villages throughout the Germantown Area; 94% of the residents (25 or older) have a High School Diploma, and 72% have attended at least one year of college. Forty-six percent of Germantown's adults have a four year college degree.

The Germantown campus of Montgomery College, with a population of over 5,000 students, faculty, and staff, serves the Upcounty's continuing education needs. The Government Center houses the expanded Public library, Montgomery County School Offices, a new day-care provider, and regional offices of the recreation department, social services, and the parks department. Germantown's retail business is still expanding with the opening of Germantown Center to accompany the Sugarloaf and Germantown Commons Centers, among others.

Commuters in and out of Germantown are served by the MARC commuter rail service, and several Ride-On county bus routes. The Shady Grove Metro station is ten miles away. The improved 1-270 provides direct connection to Washington D.C. (25 miles) and Frederick (15 miles). Major arterial highways include Maryland routes 27, 28, 117, 118, and 355, all scheduled for improvement. Great Seneca Highway has also enhanced Germantown's accessibility.

There are many recreational resources in and around the Germantown area, including two lakes, and nearby Black Hills Regional Park and Seneca Creek State Park. If you're looking for a little more metropolitan entertainment, Rockville and Bethesda are about 15 minutes away, and Washington, D.C. is about a half hour's drive away.
